a quiet hallow's eve
Tuesday is the worst day of the week for holidays, as this year’s conspicuous lack of Halloween psytrance events demonstrates. Even the most dedicated party animal must rationalize long to cook up an excuse to go wild on a Tuesday night.
This past weekend saw intimate-yet-excellent family events; tonight promises only more of the same if anything at all. The NY psytrance community is still reacting to the temporary loss of its primary private dance space and the traditional Halloween party held there, so nothing substantial was planned in its place.
For those that simply had to dance, the only event of note was this past Saturday’s Demons and Deities masquerade at CoSM. As Anrei’s multitude of photographs evidence, all of NY’s psychedelic costume enthusiasts attended that night, trancer or otherwise.
The psy-drought will continue until the second weekend in November, when everyone in the northeastern United States will be throwing parties all at once. Happy Halloween, for now.

glowing green jungle mushrooms
(via National Geographic) Brazilian psytr
ance promoters now know where to hold their ne
xt festival:
Like a black light poster come to life, a group of bioluminescent fungi collected from Ribeira Valley Tourist State Park near São Paulo, Brazil, emanates a soft green glow when the lights go out. At night a chemical reaction causes the fungus to emit an eerie green glow sometimes called foxfire.

chemo-luminesence
Need something to breathe new life into your dancefloor persona? There is always temporary hair color that glows without
black lights.

By mixing fluorophors with an appropriate catalyst a chemical reaction occurs that produces the byproduct of light. No blacklights, bulbs, or batteries are necessary to create the glow, and the illumination shampoos right out. Tiny, microscopic particles in the gel come together in the mixing process to produce a bright colorful glow that can be seen in partial light and in the dark for several hours. Essentially, wearing this stuff is the same as cracking open a glow stick and pouring the contents over your head, only brighter.

harvest weekend retrospected
The openair gathering outside of Allentown proved the more rewarding of this past weekend’s
events, despite freezing temperatures and an unorganized organizer. A few hardy souls managed to stomp around the dancefloor to stay warm, but for the rest, a home cooked dinner, large fires and an endless supply of wood kept them going through the night. The music continued long after the sun returned, however, so everyone danced once the air thawed.
Daniel Pinchbeck participated in the gathering, delivering on Sunday morning a hilltop presentation on the virtues of the Mayan calendar system and the importance of crop circles. Most, but not all, attended to his words. There is (very) raw footage of the talk up on DMTV.
From opinions gathered, the deco stole the show at Burning Lotus, as it did at Metaforce the night before. Another reviewer noted that
“…The video guy Peter Parker pulled something I’ve never seen before, a huge pixel projector throwing fractals on a forest. No one could get it on film, but I have to tell you it was the most incredible thing I’ve seen in memory.” from machineelf
We agree. The best bit of deco the gatherings around here have ever seen; two trees illuminated by moving green light.
Sunil and a DLSR camera provided us with these memories of the weekend.

[mix] Harvest Arcanum
An authentically-autumn trance weekend awaits us here in New York. First off is a dark psytrance party later today, which is a Friday the 13th. In October, as it happens. Tomorrow, Saturday the 14th, promises the last regional outdoor gathering of 2006, Burning Lotus. There will have to be a lot of burning, too, as the temperature is expected to dip into the thirties that night.
In the brisk spirit of the season, here is a Harvest mix from up north, where Basilisk is presumably no stranger to the cold. In his own words:
I dig into progressive trance and tribal house territory, keeping it all fairly low-key. The final half hour picks up the pace, taking the crowd on an electro rollercoaster ride designed to get everyone pumped and psyched for a full night of dancing and celebration.
01 :: Orbital – Halcyon + On + On
02 :: Rai – Comet
03 :: André Absolut – Lost & Found
04 :: Eelke Kleijn – Deeper Depths

Birthdays & Anniversaries
The weekend marked several momentous events in the local psychedelic trance history. Psychedelic trance itself first (officially) arrived on the shores of New York during a Return to the Source party at the Liberty Science Center, ten years ago this month.
In a fine demonstration of synchronicity, a number of the New York psytrance community celebrated a birthday in the weeks around this date including Joanne, Lauren, Albert, Steven, and Kamal; Orion’s return to NY marked the start of the weekend with sushi on Friday night.
To mark the occasion, members of the community came together to offer a communal celebration that will be fondly remembered by all involved. DJ Monkey and his eponymous partner Serena provided a comprehensive mix of entrepenuerial party services. In addition to his headlining gift set, the couple deco’d the dance floor with pvc party streamers and fluro tapestries, while also setting up a gallery of psychedelic collages in the lounge.
Their new line of psytrance shirts also debuted, displayed prominently on a shelf beside the dance floor, and which later became a convenient gift for many a birthday trancer. “Its all part of the experience we create,” Monkey said.
Other pillars of the community helped in their typically unsung fashion. Dandraver’s speakers, delivered by 28thDay to 55lex, which opened its reclusive doors for the intimate family party. Mayur, Ben, Christian, Coral, Lauryn;
Dave Henshaw and Marria travelled down from Boston, gracing us with his morning music and her, an intense LED hooping session during which she hooped out of existence. She also took the occasion to complete delivery of 28th Day’s newly-branded merchandise, done through her affiliate graphic design shop.
Special thanks go out to Onrei for capturing the spirit of this gathering in his photographs, a rare feat in our nighttime world.
