tale of the three psy-weeklies
Sometimes the collective consciousness manifests itself in unexpected and entertaining ways.
The start of the winter season in New York is traditionally a time of cold, and hibernation. Smoking is unpleasant, waiting for subways in the middle of a winter’s night even moreso. Even in these modern times with ~60F weather during the holidays, cultural habits change more slowly.
The night life loses its frentic edge, people turn their thoughts to gift-giving and family and then slowly rebuild their credit through the months that lead into summer.
At the same time, the 2006 party season will go down as one of the best in our local tribe’s history. It was only inevitable that one of our many trance collectives would attempt to rekindle the fires of the Psytrance Weekly and coast on the momentum of summer’s special grooves.
Unexpectedly, three completely autonomous party collectives launched (or in one case, re-launched) simultaneous weekly events.
28thday, the collective responsible for the best parties of 2006, announced their weekly party first (mentioned previously). 28thday blanketed the psytrance community — and certain subversive elements in the greater NYC house scene — with a coordinated series of novel new media promotions.
In the weeks between that announcement and that inaugural event however, the Japanese psytrance collective Mad Elephant announced and launched their weekly ‘Activate’ party in the space of only a few days. It was also free.
The talented organizers behind the Psycheground weekly, remembered fondly by many trancers here, announced its resurrection shortly thereafter. At that point there were a party on Tuesday, Wednesday, and then Thursday nights; then the all-night trance parties that followed on Friday and/or Saturday. In winter, the off-season.
The dust has settled now, almost a month later. Of the three psy-weeklies, only Activate remains, and even it is no longer free. First to fall was the Psychegrounds. 28thday’s effort endured two rounds of harsh capitalistic examination before it, too, fell into hibernation. When contacted about the state of the weekly, 28thday’s executive producer stated that “…we are re-focusing our attention on what we do best: free outdoor psytrance parties…In 2007, the psyNY community can expect a series of summer-long outdoor psytrance weeklies with the best psychedelic and progressive trance DJs our money can fly.”

yuletime antix
Today’s solstice marks the festival of Yule (for a modern take on this
most ancient of festivals, go here). The Winter Solstice had been associated with the birth of a “Divine King” long before the rise of Christianity. Since the Sun is considered to represent the Male Divinity in many Pagan Traditions, this time is celebrated as the “return of the Sun God.” The sunset at 4:22 PM today marks the shortest day of the year; tomorrow’s sunrise is the first of the new sun.
Accordingly, the NY trance family will be meeting tomorrow night, Friday the 22nd, to dance to the sounds of Antix in Brooklyn. Visit Omnitribe for more details.

[mix] soulstice
from Shankar, on tribalvision:
It is December, and the holidays approaching us. It is the time of change, a time of new beginnings, a time of solstice. We still have a long trek towards the long-awaited summer that has dissapeared on us suddenly without any warnings. I have decided to record a special set dedicated to the long lost memory of this amazing season. This is a tribal progressive mix,, assembeled with the immensity of light and color. Each and every track contains brightness and energy. It is a set that will take to a journey through the beaches of Anjuna to the mystical rainforests of Brazil into a big, giant trance-dancing. I hope you enjoy this little piece of experience wherever you are and no matter what you do.

[mix] Random's Redux
This past weekend saw an energetic, if brief, night of dancing with Random and Spook from Geomagnetic.tv. 28thday hosted a party at posh SoHo restuarant Boom, confounding the well-heeled locals, well-dressed drinkers, and bar staff alike. By four the place was closing its doors, but the mixing continued at an expansive afterparty up on Riverside Drive.
In exchange for fair lodgings, Spook bartered with one of his label’s releases, Psychic Chakra. The tracks proved to be good listening for winding-down on the Sunday morning (and early afternoon) that followed.

the psytrancer's holiday gift guide
It is the holiday season again, which for most of us means presents, no matter if you celebrate Christmas, or Hannukah, or Kwanzaa, the Solstice, a Saturnalia, or even just New Year’s. Trancers are no exception to the rule.
So what do you get someone who has presumably rejected the average consumerist existence for an idealized, next-generation lifestyle? We here at dance.with.us have come up with a few psychedelic or otherwise unique gifts for your trance family and friends.
