Today’s solstice marks the festival of Yule (for a modern take on this most ancient of festivals, go here). The Winter Solstice had been associated with the birth of a “Divine King” long before the rise of Christianity. Since the Sun is considered to represent the Male Divinity in many Pagan Traditions, this time is celebrated as the “return of the Sun God.” The sunset at 4:22 PM today marks the shortest day of the year; tomorrow’s sunrise is the first of the new sun.
