Spectra revisited
A bit of local trance history.
Before the Current Era (2005 – ?) chronicled so diligently here at di.onys.us, in the first years of the new millennium it was the Spectra and Omnitribe collectives that best served underground psychedelic trance music to the NY community.
“The two crews worked both together and independently – bringing such acts as Vibrasphere, Son Kite, Atmos, Noma, Buzz, Phony Orphants, Antix, S-Range, Haldolium, Timetech, Oryx, Shiva Shandra, and DJ’s the likes of Emok, Anti,Peter Digital, and Dmitri just to name a few,” despite “…constantly battling the New York police, the Cabaret Laws…and the Coincidental Natural Disaster.
In 2003 Gavin returned home to Malmo, Sweden, taking Spectra with him. He spent the intervening years professionally engaged in the European music market, working as promoter, booking agent, label DJ, and party organizer. By 2006, Gavin realized that although he “…enjoyed the lifestyle and the work [in Europe], my expertise and passion for production was best suited to the industrious spirit New York City.”
Gavin and Spectra migrated back to NYC in early 2007. He quickly reconnected with old allies, added a few new faces to the crew. They set Saturday, April 28th as the date for their first new production and set about telling the world of their re-incarnation.

The community responded positively to the news in word and deed, evidenced by heavy promotion and testimonials in the nature of:
When I saw the flyer for the SPECTRA Party on
April 28th, I just got super excited as my mind filled
with memories from all the old Spectra parties… Son
Kite playing live after a DJ set from Dimitri!…If you were
at any of the other Spectra Parties, then you know
what I’m trying to say here (even if it is totally
incomprehensible)…Son Kite playing live after a DJ set from Dimitri! Vibrasphere live! Son Kite live in an art gallery! The night we danced in front of a flooded bathroom in a building not even fully constructed yet – listening to… Hell, I barely remember!! (Shiva Chandra?) Kalyx opening for Emok the night the party was raided. The Hux Flux live set BEFORE Noma at the Key… I mean, these are the nights, the parties!
-excerpted from the writings of “Charles Dickens” Henshaw
Organizer Q/A
And now, a few questions with DJ-promoter Gavin of Spectra:
Q:What is your vision for Spectra Music and what are you planning for the psyNY community?
First and foremost I am committed to producing a really great party. Great music, great vibe.
When I experienced my first psy-trance party , I became inspired. I’d like others to have the chance to
experience that same feeling.
I guess I am still a dance music idealist.
Q: What about the first Spectra party? What should we expect?
The party on the 28th with Shane Gobi will be an excellent representation of how I feel different styles can work together. I think we can learn something from those who have done it the longest…
I’m going to continue to push the sounds and artists that I believe in – there’s a lot of cross pollination these days, with other genres heavily influencing trance music. It is my greatest hope to see all these roads converge into one.
Q: When should we show up?
I suggest guests come early enough to see Kenji Williams’ performing part of his multi-media project Gaia Journeys.
We are really lucky to be hosted by Shelter… although the Spectra party ends at 5 a.m, Shelter will pick up where we leave off and go until 2 p.m.

bicycle day
On April 19th, 1943 at 4:20 pm Dr. Albert Hofmann, chemist for Sandoz Pharmaceuticals in Basel, Switzerland, swallowed the first deliberately ingested LSD.
Feeling a sense of urgency to return home immediately, Dr. Hofmann jumped on his bicycle and rode home.

spring 07 trance travel update
The world-walking NY trancer Rebecca Patience Roman writes in from her current tour:
Hellow peeps,
Greetings and salutations long time. Thought you might like to know that Reid (Wave’s brother from the Frying Pan) finally embarks on his 3 year journey on his schooner around the planet to break the world record. His launch party is today 1-3pm. .
On the other hand I traveled to Thailand for the Rainbow World Gathering. Great to be in the jungle and the beach. “The Beach” indeed. Ko-Phan-Ghan was a fun psy-trance induced island. People live there just to party.
Was in Asia 2 months (so cheap, $10 a day w/food and guesthouse) and been in Denmark now a month. Simon Posford from Hallucinogen was just here last Sat., ended up hanging out with him and brought him to the after-party, he’s super-cool. There IS a psy-trance scene here in Copenhagen. Small but alive. Going to another psy-feast tonight at a Yoga studio.
As Stage Manager I’ll be doing The Freakshow again this year in Sweden on July 7th. Goa Gil is playing a 24hr.set and Torston and Iselin, my close friends will finally tie the knot in a psychedelic journey to the stars. If anyone is interested in performing at The Freakshow and flying to Sweden e-mail me. Tell me what you do.
You can check out The Freakshow movie we filmed at BOOM festival last August in Portugal. Blacklight from Freakfactory joined me and we did a great show (he’s the one in the mask, great dancer).
Should be back in NY in a week or so. Heard you guys got hit with quite a storm. Springtime however is in the air and time for outdoor festivals once more, put on your seat belts!
With love,
RebeccaPS – Post Thailand pics up soon…

Ralph Metzner and Divine Balance at CoSM
Saturday the 14th of April will see a full night at CoSM, seperated into three discrete events:
- First is an Introduction to Alchemical Divination by Ralph Metzner.
- At 8pm Alex Grey will join Ralph for a conversation on Alchemy, Entheogens, and the Visionary Experience.
- Rounding out the evening in unusual fashion unusual will be the Divine Balance Trinity Benefit, billed as a “Night of Sonic Healing,” it will consist of multiple sound environments supported by over a dozen psychedelic and electronic musicians. In the words of the organizers:
What we intend to do will actually go beyond CoSM. The technology is so powerful that its expected to be felt at a field diameter of one city block at a minimum and upto 1.5 miles! So believe it or not, or be at CoSM or not. If you stand at the 542 W 27th street block on the 14th of April between 12am and 3am you WILL feel it!

Originally from Stockholm and now permanently living in the United States, electronic music quickly became a way of life with influences from the early electronic artists like Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis. Picking up his first Goa CD in 1994 along with his heavy involvement in quality trance events in Texas and the local dance community is what inspired him to take it to the next level and focus on DJing and the production side of dance music.

as below, so above
Heaven above, heaven below; stars above, stars below;
all that is above, thus also below; understand this and
be blessed.
That which is below is like that which is on high, and that which is on high is like that which is below; by these things are made the miracles of one thing.
