man burned 5 days early in black rock city
The ritual of Burning Man was disrupted by an amusing act of counterculture fundamentalism when the effigy was burned five days early by an embittered veteran Burner.

The blaze began at the apex of a total lunar eclipse — stunning beautiful in the open desert — and drew an amusing mix of reactions from the crowd. Cheers, boos, screams of outrage and terror.
In our own professional dionysian opinions, Larry Harvey’s response was most appropriate.
Larry Harvey, Burning Man’s co-founder and director, was on a platform in his camp watching the eclipse when he noticed his Man on fire. Once realizing that the fire was under control and no one was apt to be hurt, he says, his immediate reaction was laughter.
The early burn, he said, will help show that the Man itself is “nothing but a wooden doll,” and that the event is really about the joint effort of attendees to create it. It will turn this year’s Burning Man into a “narrative of community and redemption” as the attendees get to see or assist in the public rebuilding of the statue, he said.

…and now for something completely different
In the spirit of Psylab is Battles, a rock band that “…will close the season with some serious math-y insanity.
Seeing them is believing that rock will forever evolve. To call what Battles does “math-rock” doesn’t really give them or their rhythms justice. Call what they do “quantum-physics-core” or something. Every band that didn’t have a singer and liked to guitar-noodle mid-song were called math-rock. But Battles does more than shift tempos and create time disruptions.
They are appearing Friday August 31st at the South Street Seaport Music Festival, a free outdoor concert series.
They go on at 8pm; the music starts at 6. It is of course free.

8/19/07: dance party in the park
The 28thday psy collective is celebrating its two-year anniversary with Eudaemonia, a free outdoor dance party at Dycker Park in Brooklyn, NY.
Voice of OOOD – a psy mix featuring their various psy tracks
We’ve been enamored with the real-time remixing, instrumental improvisations, groovy surprises, and straight-up novelty of VoC’s live ever since they first played for us. It is an honor to bring Andrew and Colin back overseas for another summer open-air experience. Let’s spread out on the grass, tense and then relax our jaded ears deep in the mother.
Community artists D-space, LAURyN, and Tony Unorthodox will be playing solidly-progressive psy .
Where To Find It
Dyker Beach Park, Brooklyn. We expect to be situated near the playground entrance, adjacent to the restrooms, along 86 St between 13 & 14 Aves.
12 noon until 7pm, rain or shine.
There will be a limited amount of free refreshments, but feel free to bring what you can. I’m pretty sure the City frowns upon drinking alcohol in city parks, so don’t.

Metaforce Marketplace Launches
6362Metaforce announced the opening of their digital psy marketplace. The site will also serve as their home and showcase on the net.
The goa-style digital bazaar debuted with a collection of trance CDs and leather accessories. Jewelry is promised next, with the eventual goal of being a full goa-style marketplace for ‘family’ artists in the global psy village.
Co-founder Rachel writes:
“…We’ve worked for 8 months to create this portal…the music, art, clothing, jewelry and accessories featured here come from artists around the globe, and all have been specially chosen for their high quality and unique creative essence – but also because of the purity of the souls who created them.”
The recent release of Metaforce’s first compliation shows that the husband-and-wife team at the heart of Metaforce is a potent business engine. We wish them luck in their new tribal enterprises.
